‘Idiot’ for betting with Max Verstappen at the Italian Grand Prix

MONZA, Italy – George Russell said that he believes Max Verstappen will glide across the pitch at the Italian Grand Prix from wherever he starts on Sunday.

There is confusion about the final grid order after qualifying, with nine drivers fined for changing engines performed in the last 48 hours.

Verstappen qualified second but was fined five places after Red Bull fitted a new internal combustion engine to its cars.

With other drivers below him set to serve major penalties, it’s unclear whether Verstappen will drop to seventh – as it seems logical on paper – or to fourth, due to inheriting roughly blank due to the penalty for Carlos Sainz, Sergio Perez and Lewis Hamilton.

Russell, starting second after qualifying sixth, is hoping Verstappen will return to the lead soon.

“[You’ve] must be pretty stupid to bet against it,” Russell said when asked if Verstappen could win on Sunday.

“He just needs to keep his nose clean for the first two rounds and he’ll go to victory.”

The nature of the Monza circuit plays into the Red Bull’s powerful straight-line speed.

Verstappen, who looks set to finish the title at one of the next two races, Japan or Singapore, is confident of extending his winning streak.

“My race runs, they feel very good, very happy with that pace,” Verstappen said. “So I’m really looking forward to tomorrow’s race.”
