Important athletes speak about places like Qatar

Lewis Hamilton says athletes have a responsibility to protest the country’s human rights record, ahead of F1’s first Qatar Grand Prix.

Qatar hosts its first race in Losail this weekend and has signed a 10-year contract to host a race from 2023 onwards.

Human rights groups criticize Qatar on a number of issues, including its male guardianship policy and laws against women and LGBTQ+ individuals. State-sponsored labor policy is also in focus as Qatar is aggressively preparing to host the football World Cup next year.

Hamilton, who has become F1’s biggest voice when it comes to global issues, said it would be a mistake to shy away from protesting the country’s record ahead of the race.

“I really feel that we know that there are problems in the places where we are going, because they are all over the world,” he said. “But of course [Qatar] seems to be considered one of the worst in this part of the world.

“I think when sports come to these places, they have an obligation to raise awareness of these issues.” These places need media scrutiny to speak out about these things. Equal rights is a serious issue. “

Hamilton said he looks forward to more athletes using their platform to speak out.

He added: “If we go to these places, we need to elevate the situation. One person can only make some small difference, but overall we can have a bigger impact.

“Do I wish that more athletes and women would speak out on these issues? Yes.” It’s up to you to decide to educate yourself and hold the sport more accountable and make sure the sport really does something when they get to those places. “
