Via Knitting Ambrosio: Jermall Charlo is stepping up the fight against the conqueror of Canelo, Dmitry Bivol, who has withdrawal is written on it for the undefeated WBC middleweight champion.
After fourteen years of playing it safe, fighting non-threatening opponents, why would ‘Big’ Charlo suddenly want to break that trend by going up against a senior boxer in Bivol (21-0, 11) KO)? It’s pretty obvious when you think about it.
When Jermall returns to the ring next year, he may be forced to defend his WBC middleweight title against his compulsion. Carlos Adamesand it’s a fight he’s probably going to lose.
Only fought once a year for the past two years and got out of a 20-month layoff, chatter Jermall will face the 28-year-old younger Adames (22-1, 17 KOs). Also, the amount of money Jermall makes fighting Adames won’t be big as it is NOT a pay-per-view worthy contest.
It doesn’t matter if Showtime sticks to Charlo vs. Adames on PPV; it’s not going to bring big numbers because it’s not the fight boxing fans are asking for. Adames is not a big name.
On the other hand, if Jermall faces the next Bivol at 168, it’s a fight that will be sold on PPV as it can be marketed from the perspective that the winner will face. Canelo Alvarez next.
Jermall’s career won’t be as badly damaged by losing to Bivol as it was by being defeated by Adames. In other words, Charlo will have a reason to fight a guy in a bigger weight class than he is in Bivol, even though we assume Jermall is bigger than him.

It was Charlo making the call, not Bivol, but it’s still an interesting fight if that happens.

You have to give Jermall respect for being able to get out of the 170s fighting at 154 and 160 over the years, but that’s also a bit of a lame.
