Remember Mewgenics? The eccentric cat-raising Roguelike is the brainchild of Super Meat Boy co-creator and The Binding of Isaac mastermind Edmund McMillen and has appeared on and off the work for a decade. Once notified, hold and reboot, it seems to have a new release window.
McMillen tweeted GIFs of two of the game’s adorable cats participating in what we call intimate cat exercise. The tweet that links to the game Steam pagewhich lists the 2024 release window.
What the hell are Mewgenics? The game requires the player to collect and breed hundreds of cats to train and send into battle. Or, as the Steam description says, Mewgenics is a “turn-based legacy roguelike draft simulation about cats!” The game seems to boast “100 hours” of gameplay, multiple classes with over 50 unique abilities, over 200 enemies, and other features.
Mewgenics was the first announced in 2012, McMillen at the time described it as “the weirdest project I’ve ever worked on.” McMillen worked on it alongside Tyler Glaiel; The pair have previously collaborated on The End is Nigh, among other titles. The game was originally billed as a combination of Pokémon, The Sims, and Animal Crossing, and was first scheduled for release in 2014. Of course, it is delayed and its development keep indefinitely in 2016 when McMillen started working on The Legend of Bum-Bo, which debuted in 2019. At the time, McMillen was uncertain about Mewgenics’ future, but in 2018 he announced that he was. game remake will be released after “a few years”.
