Via Dan Ambrose: Jamel Herring was impressed with the maturity Shakur Stevenson showed with his win over Robson Conceicao last Friday night at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
Herring felt that Shakur (19-0.9 KOs) could have prevented Conceicao (17-2, 8 KOs) if he had finished because the Brazilian was there to be eliminated.
With Stevenson now moving to lightweight, Herring says he’s going to have to change the way he fights because they punch harder in that weight class.
Herring is warning Stevenson about trying to take down the fighter at 135, like he did with Conceicao. Shakur was hit a lot by Conceicao, and he couldn’t afford to be hit by the same shots at 135.
There are plenty of people at lightweight that Shakur can take down because they’re not big boxers, but against Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, Ryan Garcia and Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz, he’ll need to be careful.
“I feel that he has shown maturity, especially with all that he has been through with his weight and everything. He still shows his composure and does everything he has to,” James Herring told Fighthype about Shakur Stevenson’s win over Robson Conceicao.
“I think he could have stopped him, especially after the hit, but he took off the accelerator as indicated. It could be because he’s been trying to gain weight all week.
“So we’ll see what he does at a mild level. Shakur Stevenson may not be the biggest puncher or the biggest puncher rising, especially from one tournament to the next.
“He still has the technical level and the skill level to play against a lot of people out there. I believe he will remain frustrated and take a few of those titles, if not all at a light level. He must be smart. He can’t go in there and drag everyone down like he did tonight.
“In the end, he can do it if he stops them, but he has to be smart when he does it. His solidity and defensive skills,” Herring said when asked if Shakur’s technical skills would allow him to succeed at 135.
“If you can’t hit something, it doesn’t matter how big or strong you are. If you can’t land a perfectly solid hit on him, it doesn’t matter how big a puncher you are up there.
“A lot of guys that he mentioned on stage. Vasyl Lomachenko, he will always be a threat, no matter what people think. Devin Haney, you have to be at number 1 because he’s the split type. He’s a type for a reason.
“I can go back and forth between Lomachenko and Gervonta Davis, mainly because of his antagonistic past. Tank is still a sharp, powerful fighter. He’s not just powerful. He really has technical boxing skills too.
“We just haven’t seen that against a high-level opponent. I definitely found Tank Davis to be a dangerous fight. If I had Tank and Lomachenko in 2nd place, I might have to give 3rd place to Ryan Garcia.
“When you have star power like Shakur Stevenson, trust and believe, they will force the issue to make him mandatory or convince someone, one of the champions, to enter the ring. with him by carrying the bank. . That is a possibility. Herring said.
