Janelle Monáe’s BET Awards Dress Responds to Roe v. Wade
Janelle Monae issued a statement regarding the decision of SCOTUS to overturned Roe v. Wade – the landmark 1973 case that defended one’s right to have an abortion – in 2022 Bet the Prize. Use Red carpet As a starting point, Monáe worked with the stylist Alexandra Mandelkorn to source a cape with a multitude of symbols.
Monáe wore a black Roberto Cavalli dress complete with a sheer, floor-swept skirt that was tied with a leather belt at chest level. Follow Mandelkorn and creative director Cavalli Fausto Puglisi. Mandelkorn wrote on Instagram below an Instagram photo of the dress, while Puglisi noted how the dress was designed to “follow patriarchal rules”.
The “Stronger” singer completed their look with black and silver diamonds from Dena Kemp and Vhernier, Stéfère question mark earrings and foundational patent flats, adorned by makeup by Stéfère. Keita Moore and hair by Nikki Nelms.
Monáe, 36, joined several other celebrities at the event. support abortion rights with them speech. When Monáe presented the nominations for best female R&B/pop artist on stage, she told the audience, “To black artists, non-black artists, artists This artist makes art our own way, owns our truths, and expresses ourselves freely and without remorse in a world that tries to control and police our bodies. my body, our decisions and my decisions. F*ck Supreme Court.”
Monáe is not new to sartorial messaging. Actors and musicians stick to one monochrome palette as a nod to working-class uniforms. Monae is also near celebrate pride at the LA parade in a plaid mini skirt, rhinestone nipple cover, a micro-crop top and a rainbow flag.
