With a dazzling Janet Jackson in a black granny on the front row and giant hats on many of his models, Christian Siriano opened the door. New York Fashion Week at Elizabeth Taylor’s former home, unleashed a sexy, glamorous look on Wednesday to go with his trademark evening gowns.

“I was watching the girls rehearse and I was like, gosh, imagine Elizabeth Taylor walking up these marble steps in her heels. Great. It’s great to be here,” Siriano said.
Taylor lived in the six-story, French Renaissance townhouse now nestled among office buildings in Midtown for several years in the 1950s during her Michael Todd era. Now it is an art space.
Siriano’s collection matches the long winding stairs his models walk. It’s a bit of everything as he adapts his business model to a more non-seasonal approach. That’s what his luxury clients want, he says.
The ultra-wide hats stole the show in black, royal blue and magenta colors. There’s a lot of sparkle, and a set of large tiered bell sleeves that cascade asymmetrically over a white high-collar evening gown. One sleeve starts at the shoulder and the other at the elbow.

Among his trademark showstoppers was a baby blue cape for the dress paired with a sparkly black spaghetti lace-up top with a buckle belt and long black gloves to match. fit. A strip of camo adorned his long-sleeved gold cloak and he placed narrow stripes of gold and black over another.
“This show is really about the return of glamour,” said Siriano. “I really want that. My clients are really looking for that, especially now. They have been stuck for too long. It’s like, the thing that I can wear is the most extravagant, the most amazing thing? “

Siriano is one of the few designers who hasn’t given up on runway shows during the darkest months of the pandemic.
He’s dressed it all up, cementing a solid A-list fan base from Jackson himself (she yelled at him on Instagram) to Cardi B, Lizzo, Jennifer Lopez, Ariana Grande, Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama.
“I’ve wanted to dress Janet all my life,” Siriano said. “She was everything I wanted when I grew up. She was it. “
When he told his mother, who often attends his concerts, that Jackson would be his guest, she replied, “Well, that’s it. I don’t even have to come.”

He’s dressing up for Monday’s Emmy Awards, but I don’t know exactly how he’ll be dressed. He provided a tidbit: definitely nominated Laura Linney.
“It’s a good list,” said Siriano, “but I don’t know until I see them on the carpet.”
