January passenger car wholesale 8% off amid semiconductor shortage

Automotive industry body SIAM said on Friday the volume of passenger vehicles from factories to dealerships in India fell 8% in January, mainly due to a lack of semiconductors.
Total passenger car wholesale volume decreased to 2,54,287 units in January 2022 from 2,76,554 units in the same month last year.
In the last month, the number of passenger cars shipped at 1,26,693 units compared to 1,53,244 units in the same period last year. Similarly, vans decreased to 10,632 units during the review period from 11,816 units in January 2021.
However, utility vehicle sales rose to 1,16,962 units last month from 1,11,494 units in January 2021.
Total two-wheeler shipments fell 21% to 11,28,293 units from 14,29,928 units in the same period last year.
Similarly, the wholesale volume of tricycles fell to 24,091 units last month from 26,794 units in January 2021.
Total submissions last month fell to 14,06,672 units from 17,333,276 units in the same month last year.
“Sales sales in January 2022 are again down compared to January 2021, due to both concerns related to Omicrons and semiconductor shortages. It is clear that there is a demand problem for two-wheeled vehicles. due to lower entry-level models in the countryside,” said India Automobile Association General Manager Rajesh Menon of Manufacturers (SIAM).
On the other hand, the passenger car segment failed to meet market demand due to supply-side challenges, he added.
“Tricycles continue to be severely impacted due to lower sales,” Menon said.
Last month, the country’s largest automaker Maruti Suzuki shipped 1,28,924 units compared with 1,391 units in January 2021.
Hyundai Motor India saw its shipments drop to 44,022 units last month from 52,005 units in January last year.
