Via Robert Segal: WBC super flyweight champion Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez (15-0, 10 KOs) is defending his newly won title for the first time against No. 2 Srisaket Sor Rungvisai (50-5-1, 43 KOs) ) in a 12-round match. during the main event this Saturday, June 24 on DAZN at Tech Port Arena, in San Antonio, Texas.
Rungvisai owns wins against Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez and Juan Francisco Estrada. He beat them in their prime, but he is rising at 35.
He can be big enough for Bam Rodriguez to beat him if he sits on his bike for 12 laps and avoids socializing. It would be boring, but it’s the only way Rodriguez can beat a boxer with the power of Rungvisa.
Rodriguez, 22, recently won the vacant 115-lb WBC belt with a unanimous 12-round win over former WBC champion Carlos Cuadras earlier this year on February 5 in Phoenix, Arizona.
Like his brother Joshua Franco, Jesse Rodriguez is a pure boxer, a skilful guy who doesn’t overwhelm strength.
Rodriguez will not be able to stand and trade with heavy-handed Srisaket Sor Rungivsi if he is not knocked down.
For that reason, we’ll see the 22-year-old move around a lot as he doesn’t have enough firepower to trade off with the naturally stronger Rungvisai.
In his final bout, ‘Bam’ Rodriguez was forced to get on the bike after feeling the power of his best 33-year-old Cuadras past early on and was able to beat him in the decisive round 12.
With the constant movement from 22-year-old Bam Rodriguez, watching him unbox a very old-looking Cuadras is no fun. He looks nothing like the boxer he was in 2016 when he pitted Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez in an exciting competition.
The World Boxing Council has two champions in 115th place, and Bam Rodriguez is considered the second after Franchise champion Juan Francisco Estrada.
Rodriguez may not be ready to take on a fighter of the caliber of Estrada as well as Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez. Those guys are on another level compared to Bam Rodriguez and his brother Joshua Franco.
We recently saw what happened to Julio Cesar Martinez when he played against Chocolatito on March 5, losing badly in 12 decisive innings. To be fair, we’ll see the same thing happen to Bam Rodriguez if and when he faces Estrada and Chocolatito.
The only difference is that Bam would sit on his bike and play away from the whole game and lose a decision based on his unwillingness to mix it up with those legends.
Running works against Bam against Cuadras, but it won’t work against those guys as they will cut off the ring on Rodriguez and force him to fight.
The final match of the event Rodriguez vs. This Saturday’s Rungvisai is a good match, with Rey Martinez facing McWilliams Arroyo in a rematch.
Prediction: Bam Rodriguez won the decisive 12th round by hitting and moving all night.
