A junior engineer was arrested in Jamshedpur, police said, after he moved around in a car early Friday with a body stuffed in a cricket bag and in the trunk.
Police have taken the body away, East Singhbhum police senior director M Tamil Vanan said.
SSP said the engineer confessed during questioning that the body belonged to a moneylender, a resident of Kasidih locality in Jamshedpur and visited his residence, when no family members were present. he was with a woman on Thursday afternoon.
But soon two people, including the woman’s husband, arrived and a brawl broke out with the moneylender. During the argument, one of the men grabbed a cricket bat and hit the money-lender, injuring him, he confessed.
SSP said the engineer testified that he agreed to dispose of the money lender’s body when the two men threatened him. He bought a sports bag at the Sakchi market, stuffed the body in it to avoid detection, and stored it in the trunk of a car for disposal.
Meanwhile, two men demanded Rs 50 lakh from the engineer’s family members on WhatsApp for his safe release. However, they agreed to release the engineer after his family members agreed to pay Rs 25 lakh, police said.
The family went to police when they failed to reach the engineer on his two cell phones.
SSP said a special investigative team was immediately formed and the police engineering department was alerted to the two men who were regularly texting the engineer via cell phone to demand ransom from different locations of steel city.
Suspecting the two men were moving in the car with a junior engineer, the police rushed in to check and stopped this car after midnight.
The driver tried to speed away but police officers moved in time and found the body in the trunk.
