Jill Duggar feels an obligation to damage control for Josh Duggar

Former member of IBLP Emily Elizabeth Anderson shared in the series that she was Jane Doe III, because she wanted to be identified when she and nine other women sued Gothard in 2016, alleging sexual abuse and harassment.

She recalls Gothard invited her when she was 14 to drop out of home school and live at IBLP’s Chicago headquarters “indefinitely”. He told her that her father no longer loved her and “had lost all power over her,” she alleged, so Gothard “will be her new authority.”

Elizabeth describes one evening when Gothard brought her to his office and was clearly startled to see a male assistant still working, assuming they would be alone.

Gothard resigned from the IBLP board in March 2014 amid an outside legal counsel investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct which ultimately determined he had acted under “inappropriate” manner, if not criminal. When IBLP shared the findings of the investigation in June 2014, Gothard said in a later deleted statement, “My act of holding hands, hugging, and touching my legs or hair with young girls crossed the line. world of prudence and is wrong.”

The 88-year-old has not yet responded to E!’s request for comment. and declined to comment on the series. He has previously denied allegations of sexual misconduct.

The plaintiffs dropped the case in 2018 but told Recovering Grace (an online support community for IBLP alumni and its home-education program, the Institute for Advanced Training) that they ” does not retract “his allegations” or deny the incalculable damage we believe Gothard has caused done by his actions and certain teachings.”

Explaining on the show why they stopped pursuing Gothard in court, beyond the statute of limitations and financial burden, Elizabeth said, “It constantly brings back the most terrible memories of your life and tells it all over again. If you decide to move forward in a case, it’s important that you recognize the emotional harm it will continue to do to you. pay is too high.”

Jinger Duggar, who detailed her departure from IBLP in her 2023 memoir, is the only member of her family who seems to comment on Gothard’s legal affairs. She tweeted in 2018 that, while she is a Christian, “I have to be honest and true to myself by tweeting this. I don’t support Bill Gothard and the Bible Institute. [sic] The principle of living in any way, shape or form. I find his ‘teachings’ extremely questionable.”
