“Hard work” is what makes it possible for her to achieve, Hima tells NDTV

The daughter of a woman working under the MNREGA minimum wage scheme in Kerala has won a place in Delhi’s Lady Shri Ram College.
As an excellent student, Hima got an A+ in her tenth standard. With a dream to pass India’s Administrative Services exam, she chose humanities and got an A+ in Class 12. She won a centum in economics and political science with a total score of 1187 out of 10. 1200.
“I am very clear about my choice although many people despise it and my aspiration is to become an IAS officer,” Hima, who will now pursue political science in Delhi, told NDTV.
“Hard work” is what makes it possible for her to achieve, she said, adding, “My mother couldn’t pay the tuition. I was self-taught and often prepared during my lunch break.”
Confident about passing the civil service exam, Hima said, “As a civil servant, I can help others and my community more than a doctor or an engineer.”
Hima’s mother, who earns an average of Rs 1,000 a month, said: “I’m sad because my daughter’s university is so far away. But I’m happy when I think about her future.”
A non-profit organization based in Chennai helped Hima pay the admission fee. However, she still needs at least Rs 2 lakh for her accommodation, living and travel expenses in Delhi for a year.
Merwin Joshua, who has identified Hima’s potential and nurtured her over the past few years, said: “We were surprised and impressed by her focus when others mocked her.
