Kimono fashion debut at New York show
Kimonos, covered with polka dots, Cubist patterns and big-eyed anime characters, are on display at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, showing how East and West have influenced each other. to transform traditional Japanese clothing.

“Usually when you think of fashion, you think of big brands made in the Western world. But the kimono also has a fashion system from the 17th century,” said Monika Bincsik, Diane and Arthur Abbey Deputy Director of Japanese Decorative Arts at the museum.
More than 60 kimonos were displayed alongside Western costumes in the first show co-organized by the Costume Institute and the Met Library of Japan.

“Japanese kimono has had a great influence on Western fashion since the early 20th century,” says Bincsik.
For example, French producer Paul Poiret created a kimono jacket, while Western abstract art inspired the bold geometric patterned ‘Meisen’ kimonos of the early 1900s.
The exhibition runs until February 20.
