King Charles III’s Pipe Major first played at his London mansion; know more about royal traditions
King Charles III’s Pipe Major played for the first time on Tuesday, marking a historic first in his reign following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8. Major Paul Burns, who performed the lyrics last lament at Queen Elizabeth’s Funeral on September 19, playing for England’s ruling king in the garden of Clarence House while he was there.
Share a video where the army musician from the Royal Scottish Regiment can be seen in his uniform – including tartan kilt and green socks – play melodious tunes, the official Royal account writes, “Your Majesty’s Pipe Major played for the first time in the Clarence House garden this morning, as King wake up at the residence. The position was originally created by Queen Victoria in 1843, and Queen Elizabeth of the Queen of England enjoyed a special tradition after her accession to the throne in 1952.”
This is a special royal tradition in which a lone lute player plays a selection of songs each day at 9am below Kingwindow for 15 minutes. The custom dates back to Queen Victoria, who started it 179 years ago after she fell in love with the sound during a visit to the Scottish Highlands with Prince Albert. Since then, there have been 17 captains.
Based on BBC, the piper’s daily performance is divided into two seven-minute sessions. Two sessions one minute apart in between for traditional tuning and tuning Scotist tool. They also play on state occasions.
Roles are also created by Queen Victoria in 1843. The pianist, according to royal protocol, became a member of the Royal family with properties at Buckingham Palace and traveled with the monarch wherever he/she went.
This is also Piper’s first time playing in House of Clarence as the King has no immediate plans to move to Buckingham Palace – the official London residence of British monarchs since 1837. This is partly due to extensive renovations underway at the property. Buckingham Palace will be completed in 2027, according to Sunday Times.
However, even after the renovation work is completed, King Charles III may choose to stay at Clarence House, where he has lived since the early 2000s with Buckingham Palace being the site of royal skirmishes.
The report added that the King “does not see it (Buckingham Palace) as a viable future home or a home fit for purpose in the modern world. He feels that maintaining it, both from a cost and environmental perspective, is unsustainable. “
