India’s opener, KL Rahul was ruled out of the first showdown against New Zealand, starting on Thursday, due to injury. Suryakumar Yadav, who was part of India’s Test team that arrived in the UK, was added to the side. A BCCI source told PTI: “KL Rahul did not play the first test. Rahul was absent from India’s usual training session, which was attended by most of the players, on Tuesday at Green Park Stadium in Kanpur.
The nature and extent of Rahul’s injuries could not be confirmed. Shubman Gill was seen opening batting alongside Mayank Agarwal in the team’s live trade when Cheteshwar Pujara, the series opener’s vice-captain, also hit the ball.
It is understood that one of Shreyas Iyer or Suryakumar Yadav will launch his Test and come in the middle. Shubhman was expected to play in the central position but now, in the absence of Rahul, the youngster will be required to play in a familiar starting position.
