Lewis Hamilton says podium is ‘overwhelming’ after form battle at Canada GP

MONTREAL – Lewis Hamilton says his Canadian Grand Prix podium ending a lap in poor form was “overwhelming”.

After a tough race and struggling to capture Mercedes’ current car, Hamilton finished third in Montreal, where he won his first Grand Prix in 2007.

Mercedes still seems to be behind Red Bull and Ferrari, who fight to win on sundaybut Hamilton was relieved to be back on the podium.

“Honestly, it was quite overwhelming to get to this third place,” he said. “It’s been such a fight this year with the car and as a team. But we continue to be vigilant and focused and never give up.

“It’s something I’m very proud of and I’m inspired by my team. So thank you to everyone who’s been here and back to the factory.”

Hamilton is optimistic Mercedes can continue to close the gap with the leading teams.

“They’re a bit too fast for us at the moment,” he said on Red Bull and Ferrari. “I’ve given it everything but we’re getting closer. So we have to keep pushing. Hopefully will be in a fight with these guys.”

Formula one moves on to Silverstone next for the British Grand Prix on July 3, where Hamilton has the most wins with eight.
