As first reported today by The Hollywood ReporterWayfarer Studios is collaborating with Lightbeam Entertainment and Pac-Man owner Bandai Namco to develop a real-life movie based on the popular character that first appeared in 1980 via the hit video game, Pac-Man. Arcade games become a pop culture phenomenonwhich led to many sequels, spin-offs, TV shows, etc. It also inspired a fun song by Jerry Buckner & Gary Garcia called “”Pac-Man fever.“
Follow Hollywood Reporter, the film will be based on a new origin story by Chuck Williams. While you may not recognize the name, Williams is significant to this project as he has previously worked as a producer. Paramount and Sega’s Sonic The Hedgehog live-action flick. The film is currently untitled and no release date or other information about it has been shared by Bandai Namco or pilgrims.
Let’s bet on how the story will turn out. I guess Pac-Man breaks out of the old arcade game, finds himself somehow recreated in the real world, and now faces being an old video game character in the wild, modern world our. I assume weird things will happen. The trailer will feature some pop songs by Imagine Dragons. It will raise $260 million and everyone involved will start saying things like “ Pac-Man cinematic universe” seriously in interviews.
I’m joking, but considering the recent popularity Sonic movie sequel is and how well does the first one work, I guess I can most of see logic in making a Pac-Man movie. However, I can’t really see the logic in some of the other projects being worked on, based on Diversity, which includes a movie based on the Uno card game and Matchbox cars. What a world we live in…
