Lizzo shares focus with 17 activists at People’s Choice Awards

The pop star received People’s Championship at the December 6 ceremony for her efforts to empower and uplift people of all backgrounds. (See full list of winners here.)
Lizzo said in her speech that she was initially hesitant to accept the award — which had previously belonged Dwayne The Rock Johnson and Tyler Perry—because she doesn’t “need a trophy for the champions.”
“I’m here tonight, because being an icon isn’t about how long you’ve had your background,” Lizzo said. “Being an icon is what you do with that platform. Since the beginning of my career, I’ve used my platform to amplify marginalized voices, so tonight I’m sharing it. this honor.”
When accepting the People’s Champion award, she shared the moment with 17 activists she invited on stage.
She was joined by Breonna Taylormother of, Tamika Palmerpersons seeking justice for the murder of her daughter in 2020; Copy Maricalled “Little Miss Flint” for raising awareness of the water crisis in Flint, Mich.; Shirley Raines, nationally recognized for providing essential resources to Los Angeles’ Skid Row homeless people; and Maggie Mireles Thomassister with teacher Eva Mirele who was killed in Robbie primary shooter in Uvalde, Texas this year.
Lizzo also launched activists Yasmine Aker, Emiliana Guereca, Esther Young Lim, Felicia “Fe” Montes, Jayla Rose Sullivan, Kara Roselle Smith, Amelia Bonow, Odilia Romero, Rabbi Tarlan Rabizadeh, Sahar Pirzada, Chandi Moore, Crystal Echo Hawk and Reshma Saujani.
