Lomachenko dominates Commey, win decisive defeat
Ukrainian conductor Vasiliy Lomachenko reaffirmed his status as one of the top dogs in the lightweight division with a decisive unified victory over Richard Commey in New York.
Lomachenko (16-2, 11 KOs) showed off his signature punch and footwork right from the opening bell, consistently edging past Commey (30-4, 27 KOs) and beating the former IBF lightweight champion evenly. regularly throughout the contest.
Despite its dominance, ‘Loma’ was unable to start the goal. In the most notable act of the match, however, Lomachenko appeared to have mercilessly left his Ghanaian opponent in the seventh inning after hitting Commey with a crunchy left hand sending him tumbling to the tarp.
Commey wanted to get up, but was clearly injured and his legs were shaking. Instead of following, Lomachenko gestured repeatedly to Commey’s corner to enter and stop the contest, and he seemed to have slowed down considerably before allowing Commey to regain his composure in a remarkable eighth lap.
However, the third-weight world champion went home with an ill-considered unanimous decision and established himself as the WBO’s number one contender for the unification championship George Kambosos Jr.
