In the excerpt, Mr. Tewari also noted the rise of the Taliban, and wrote: “Over the past two decades, the challenges to India’s national security have been exacerbated in both complexity and intensity. degree.”
The excerpts drew a mocking rebuttal from the opposition BJP, with Amit Malviya quickly tweeting: “After Salman Khurshid, another Congress leader threw the UPA under a bus to sell his books.”

Ahead of more parliamentary elections next year, including in the state of Uttar Pradesh and in Punjab (which shares a large border with Pakistan), Mr Malviya also claimed “… (it) has made India so. become a weak country”.

With elections due next year (and the Lok Sabha election in 2024 in one eye), the BJP has been putting pressure on Congress, prompted initially by a controversial excerpt from Salman’s book. Khurshid.
Mr. Khurshid, in his book on Ayodhya, compared “Hindutva” to Islamic terrorist groups like ISIS. The comparison has drawn objections from the BJP.
The book was also questioned by Khurshid’s party colleague, Ghulam Nabi Azad.
Mr. Khurshid, whose house in Nainital was vandalized and burned, told PTI news agency: “I don’t call these guys terrorists. I just said they are similar in perverting religion.”
The November 26 attacks saw more than 160 people killed as terrorists raged across Mumbai. Nine terrorists were killed and the sole survivor – Ajmal Kasab – was arrested and executed on 11 November 2012.
The horrific attack came as the Congress-led UPA was in power at the center.
From 2012 to 2014, Mr. Tewari served as I&B Minister in the second UPA government.
This week, India will mark the 13th anniversary of those attacks, a fact the BJP will likely emphasize as it continues to highlight Mr. Tewari’s books.
