Mick Schumacher is taken to hospital for a precautionary check-up after qualifying crash in Saudi Arabia
JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia – Mick Schumacher was taken to the hospital for a precautionary check-up after a violent collision during qualifying for the Saudi Grand Prix.
The son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher lost control of his Haas car in Turn 9 and crashed into an interior fence before bouncing back across the track and coming to a halt after Turn 10.
Schumacher was conscious when the ambulance arrived on the scene and, although physically fine, was taken to the circuit’s medical center for examination and transported by helicopter to the hospital.
“Evaluation at the medical center revealed no injuries and he was transported to King Fahad Armed Forces Hospital, Jeddah, for a precautionary examination,” an FIA statement said.
The impact of the collision shattered Schumacher’s vehicle in two, with the transmission assembly falling apart as the debris was loaded onto a recovery truck.
The incident resulted in the hour-long qualifying being halted for more than 50 minutes as the car was rehabilitated, the liners were repaired and the track surface cleaned.
