Mohe: China’s northernmost city records coldest day ever
(CNN) — Temperatures in China’s northernmost city dropped to minus 53°C (minus 63.4°F) – the coldest ever recorded, meteorologists say.
China’s meteorological agency has forecast a sharp drop in temperatures in parts of the country and put out a blue cold on Monday.
Winter in Mohe is long and begins in early October, often lasting until May. Experts say the average temperature during this period has dropped below freezing.
In 2018, rare “glacial frost” – weather phenomenon occurs only in extremely cold climates when the water droplets in the air are still liquid — causing anger among residents, prompting the local government to issue a red warning about cold weather for the first time for the city.
No warnings have been issued in Mohe yet, but local meteorologists say the cold spell will continue into this week. They say ice fog is also expected.
