Munguia promoter says Bivol fight not happening, Golovkin is target for June 10
Via Knitting Ambrosio: Dmitry Bivol is no longer considered for his next match against undefeated middleweight opponent Jaime Munguia on June 10 on DAZN.
Munguia promoter Fernando Beltran says WBA lightweight champion Bivol (21-0, 11 KOs) is not “very popular,” so they are not interested in fighting him now. You can say the same thing about Munguia.
Boxing fans’ perception of Munguia is that he’s been slowly rising to prominence over a long period of time. big withdrawal by its manager. Munguia has faced below-average opposition throughout his career, giving some the impression that he’s a fake, manufactured boxer like Ryan Garcia.
Unfortunately, Munguia is not very popular because he has never raised it in his career against quality opponents instead of ham & eggers with which he lifted his 41-0 record.
Jaime Munguia’s Last Seven Rivals:
- Gonzalo Gaston Coria
- D’Mitrius Ballard
- Jimmy Kelly
- Gabe Rosado
- Kamil Szeremeta
- Tureano Johnson
- Gary O’Sullivan
Mungui’s promoter targets former middleweight champion Gennadiy Golovkin and talks with his promoter Tom Loeffler have begun.
Beltran says that Munguia has been interested in fighting Golovkin (42-2-1, 37 KOs) throughout his career and that he would be happy if he could finally face him.
“We’re not thinking about Bivol for June 10,” Fernando Beltran told Izquierdazo. “Jaime has an appointment with DAZN on June 10. Bivol is not very popular.
“We would love to fight him in the future, but we are talking about the two weight classes above. We will fight him [Dmitry Bivol] if no one else wants to. If someone runs away from him, we will face him.
“We are trying to play Gennady Golovkin on June 10. We talked to [Golovkin’s promoter] Tom Loeffler. We want to close it soon. We’ve been looking for that fight for a long time,” Beltran said.
Golovkin is unrivalled after vacating his recent 160 lb IBF & WBA titles after being ordered to defend them against Erislandy Lara and Esquiva Falcao. It is believed that Golovkin gave up the belt because there wasn’t any cyber benefit in those fights.
The big question is whether DAZN is willing to pay Golovkin the amount he is used to receiving for his matches to face 26-year-old Munguia. He wouldn’t be in this match if it wasn’t worth it to him.
In the view of DAZN, whether Golovkin vs. Whether Munguia can turn around in attracting new subscribers to their streaming platform is a question.
Golovkin turned 41 on April 8, and he has only fought a few times in the past 5 years, which has affected his popularity. What is arguably more damaging to Golovkin’s popularity than his inactivity is the opposition he faces. Instead of going up against the types of fighters fans wanted GGG to face, he went up against these guys:
- Kamil Szeremeta
- Steve Rolls
- Ryota Murata
- Sergiy Derevyanchenko
If Golovkin were to fight Jermall Charlo, Demetrius Andrade, David Benavidez, Caleb Plant & Janibek Alimkhanuly instead, his popularity would still be high as long as he wins those matches.
