National electric vehicle strategy report attracts more than 500 submissions

The federal government says it has received more than 500 submissions for a discussion document designed to shape the country’s long-awaited First National Electric Vehicle Strategy.

Energy and Climate Change Secretary Chris Bowen revealed the number of submissions on Twitter, adding that the government would “work closely on these issues in the coming weeks and months”.

Australia’s first national electric vehicle policy discussion paper – to complement the State’s numerous existing tax breaks and relief schemes – was released at the end of September.

The entire consulting document is 18 pages long, which you can read hereAccepted submissions until October 31.

“We are delighted by the strong engagement and public advocacy from manufacturers, car clubs, businesses, associations, civil society and the general public to support our transition. Australia into an electric vehicle powerhouse,” added Minister Bowen.

The overarching goal is to increase the use of electric vehicles in Australia – which is low compared to other countries in a comparable economic position – by encouraging car manufacturers to move more towards the provision of vehicles. low emissions for the local market, through new fuel economy standards.

But the paper is also designed to look at how policy settings can encourage domestic production of electric vehicles, chargers and other components; address the effects of reduced fuel consumption revenue, potentially through tolls; and support charging infrastructure.

While all Australian States and Territories have various electric vehicle incentive schemes in place, including cash rebates and tax cuts, the federal government has identified a shortage.” coordination and alignment at the national level” that the government believes must be remedied.

Core goals can be broadly defined as:

  • Making EVs more affordable
  • Expanding absorption capacity and EV . selection
  • Reduce emissions
  • Save Aussies Money on Fuel
  • Increasing Australian production

In a joint statement announcing the report, Minister Bowen and Transport and Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said: “All Australians are encouraged to have a say on how we can move transform Australia’s transport industry”.

Looks like they have.
