Netflix announces animated series and live-action film Gears Of War
The first Gear of War game was released 16 years ago, and Netflix is celebrating by announcing plans to adapt the series into both a live-action film and an animated adult series.
The streaming giant revealed the news in a tweet that unraveled the details but announced that it was partnering with Gears developer The Coalition. Based on the wording of the tweet, it looks like the animated show will come after the movie is released. It may not stop there, as Netflix also says that there is “potential for more stories to follow!”

It’s not clear if Netflix’s project is different from Gears movie announced in 2016 or if now they are one and the same. That movie has been quietly floating around for years, with screenwriter F. Scott Frazier (xXx: Return of Xander Cage) join in 2018. Producer Dylan Clark, who has also been with and recently worked with Batmanprovide a Updated in March, introduced a new announcement “very soon.” If this is the news Clark alludes to, “very soon” is quite a while, but we’ll see if Netflix confirms that it has taken over production or is working on its own adaptation.
In terms of potential cast, Guardians of the Galaxy Actor Dave Bautista has publicly requested to play the role of Marcus Fenix on several times; the last time he came was appearing as himself in Fenix’s armor as a skin in Gears 5. Given that the actor is now 53 years old, it may or may not be a time to trigger that dream casting.
This joins the pile of video game adaptations that Netflix is producing. One Movie bioshock is in the works, as well as many television series, including Sonic Primesecond season of The Cuphead Showand The Witcher (renewed for Parts 3 and 4 with Liam Hemsworth stars in sequel). Netflix has also become a game publisher, acquiring a number of studios such as Oxenfree developer Night School and most recently Spryfox (Cozy Grove) to release the game under its banner.
