Make the most of a particularly kind soundtrack to speed up the show, Peter Blum’s Society (f, 3, Gunman– Ritual, by Tapit) builds on a big win in the GIII Charles Town Oaks when last seen four weeks ago and left them on edge to claim their first Class I win in the $1 million Cotillion S. Saturday at Parx.
Draw the outer gate in a field number nine, the house dog is activated as soon as the portal flies and crosses and clears all traffic inside, getting the first few furs in: 23 33 while chased by California raider Adare Manor (Uncle Mo), got her first start since her runner-up attempt in the GII Black-Eyed Susan S. May 20, and ‘Rising star TDN’ Go green (Start up), whose Beyer 100 Speed Number for her win in the local August 23 Cathryn Sophia S. matched the number earned by the West Virginia Association.
Moved right along the backseat while deliberately kept far inside by Florent Geroux, Society was half a mile away at: 46.75, and nothing produced anything like a serious payoff. from the back, evident after six stretches for 1: 10.93. Morning matcha (Central Banker), a 45-1 bystander, skimmed the fence and made sure into the box, but all in vain, as she never caught Society, who went in about six lengths. GI Longines Winner Kentucky Oaks Secret Vow (Arrogate), who was groped by Green Up in the last few clicks, ran out and transparently down the back of the chair, but was tilted inward with about three stretches to move. Plunging hard into the final quarter of a mile, Secret Oath continued at a pace for season three.
Society debuted for coach Wayne Mackey at Keeneland last October and apparently stretched to late graduation by a period of nearly 28-1, but was transferred this year to Steve Asmussen, who is one of the architects of Gunmancareer of. Chestnut was a 1/4 length winner of the sloppy allowance about 50 minutes after Secret Oath won GI Longines Kentucky Oaks May 6 and added a pre-win in Monomoy Girl S. June 18, but did stumbled at the top of the CCA Oaks and beat only one home in fourth place. She got a good engine rating in Charles Town Oaks by Tyler Gaffalione and had plenty left when the run actually started, going home scoring 6 3/4 length.
Genealogical notes:
With the win, Society became the sixth top scorer for Gunman and was one of only two winners to be graded from mares by Tapit, join GII Adirondack S. celebrating Wicked Halo. Also bred on Gunman/Tapit cross is SW Red Run, while TapitPulpit’s sire is SW Optionality’s sire. Also bred on the cross is Echo Again, who has achieved ‘Rising star TDN’ status for a maiden walk in Saratoga August 20.
Produced by a half-sister to GSW Pleasant Prince (Indy King) and comes from an extended family of Sovereign Awards and Queen’s Plate Award winners – Holy Helena (Ghostzapper) and Midlantic-based Holy Boss (Street boss), Society has a 2-year-old half-brother named Punctuality who is training at Churchill Downs, a half-sister Finesse (Street Sense) was sold to Windancer Farm for $725,0000 at the September Keeneland sale that just ended and a half-breed pony named Valor (Omaha Beach). The ritual was brought back to the pony to Gunman last breeding season.
