Jurgen Klopp’s side picked up the pace in the first half when a disciplined Forest kept them out of rhythm.

Forest took the lead in the 55th minute when Awoniyi pulled in a rebound after his initial effort hit the post.

The home side proved dangerous on the counter-attack and had a few chances to create space for themselves.

But they owe it to the goalkeeper Dean Hendersonwho made a series of saves, the best came in injury time when he somehow managed to keep a sensation Virgil van Dijk header from close range from a corner.

Forest holds 19th place with 9 points after 12 games, leading by 1 point Leicester City. Meanwhile, Liverpool still without an away win and sitting in seventh place.

After a poor start to the season, Klopp’s side built some momentum with a stormy win last weekend against the champions. City of Manchester and followed by defeat West Ham United in the middle of the week.

Even with some injuries, they are still expected to roll with Forest in search of a hard life back in the elite.

But Steve Cooper’s side were great as they won a result that could start their season.

The ball is launched diagonally towards Steve Cook who drilled a low cross towards Awoniyi, who shone his first attempt against the post before heading home to recover.

Harvey Elliott forced Henderson to save almost immediately but Forest could have made it 2-0 on a counter-attack when Morgan Gibbs White was denied by a superb slip by James Milner while Brennan Johnson also went close.

Henderson was forced into action again to refuse Trent Alexander-Arnold from close range and the keeper created more heroes as the minutes passed.

Liverpool surrounded Forest late in the game as Van Dijk volleyed a wide volley and then saw his header brilliantly parried by Henderson.

“This is a big win but just a win. We have to build on that and move on,” said boss Forest Cooper.

“To win a game against someone like Liverpool you need to have very good moments at both ends. We did that today.”
