Pak army deployed as Imran Khan's march marches into Islamabad

Imran Khan urged his supporters not to vacate D-Chowk until a date for new polls is announced.

Islamabad:

Unable to control the growing unrest caused by a protest march launched by Imran Khan, the Shehbaz Sharif government was forced to call on the army to defend the Red Zone as the former Prime Minister of Pakistan and head of PTI advanced. into Islamabad in the early hours of Thursday.

“Based on the law and order situation in the Capital Territory of Islamabad, the Federal Government, in exercising the rights conferred under Article 245 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, authorizes the full deployment of the power of Pakistani army,” Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said in a government order posted on Twitter.

The Pakistani government has deployed troops in the Red Zone to “defend important government buildings” after Imran Khan entered the federal capital amid rising tensions in the country.

The government order says the decision was made to protect key government buildings including the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Parliament House, Presidential Palace, Prime Minister’s Office and others.

Tensions swept across the country as clashes broke out between police and PTI workers after authorities tried to stop them from moving towards D-Chowk in the federal capital.

Imran Khan on Wednesday warned his supporters not to vacate D-Chowk until the Shehbaz Sharif government announces a date for new polls.

The former Prime Minister of Pakistan, who was ousted from power after a vote of no confidence, asked “all Pakistanis” to take to the streets in their respective cities and called on women and children out of their homes for “true independence,” the Dawn reported.

Human rights groups expressed deep concern at the high appreciation of law enforcement agencies for disrupting PTI’s march to Islamabad.

“We believe that all citizens and all political parties have every right to assemble and protest peacefully,” the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) tweeted.

The group added: “The state’s overreaction has caused, more than it prevented, violence on the streets.
Pakistani media reports say that Pakistan appears to be heading towards political confrontation following the decision of the Shehbaz Sharif government to ban the PTI march. According to Dawn, the crackdown on opposition leaders and the blockade of the capital have created a highly volatile situation.

Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Wednesday restricted the current government’s arrest of Imran Khan and allowed PTI to hold a sit-in rally at the site of Islamabad’s H-9 base.

The court order came after PTI assured it would hold a peaceful protest and that there would be no damage to public and private property.
