Patient battled for months to battle near death…
Joe Curry was admitted to Methodist Hospital in December 2022 with dysfunction and multi-organ failure associated with necrotizing soft tissue infections of the chest and arms. His stay began in the ICU, where he was intubated and sedated for several days. He’s had several surgeries, including four skin grafts to remove dying tissue and muscle. Since then, he has worked with the wound care team to remove and change the wound dressing twice a week. After many medical procedures to attack the dangerous, life-threatening infection, Joe and his medical team, including emergency surgeons, plastic surgeons, care specialists wound care and nurses, fought to help him recover.
“I love the challenge of working with the surgical teams, especially the Plastics team to help fully heal Joe’s arm and allow him to recover and have a second chance at life,” said Kristen Ballard, M.D. Joe’s physiotherapist and wound care specialist. “It’s rare for me to be able to follow a patient for so long and be with Joe when we don’t know if he will survive… now seeing his arm and chest are almost completely healed. It’s all about what makes everything I do worth the effort. Joe is an amazing patient who is truly a miracle and this hospital is a great place for miracles to happen.”
