of Peru Machu Picchu, an Inca stone stronghold nestled in the rainforest to its southeast, reopened on Wednesday after being closed nearly a month ago amid anti-government protests, the culture ministry announced.

Agreements have been made between the government, social groups and the local tourism industry to ensure the security of transportation services and to attract popular tourists.

Protests calling for the resignation of President Dina Boluarte and members of the Peruvian Congress have rocked the region, including Cuzco, for more than two months. The protests caused a blockade of the train tracks leading to the rock formations.

The protests resulted in the deaths of 60 people: 48 civilians were killed in clashes with security forces; 11 civilians were killed in traffic accidents related to road blockades; and an officer died inside a patrol vehicle when it was set on fire, according to data from the Office of the Ombudsman.

The closure of Machu Picchu on January 21 forced the government to transport more than 400 tourists from Machu Picchu to Cusco by helicopter.

Machu Picchu was built in the 15th century by the Incas as a religious sanctuary in the Andes.
