A new model, called Peugeot 408will join the range of the lion brand and blur the distinction between crossovers and forklifts.
Overnight, Peugeot announced the new car “combining SUV-specific codes with a dynamic fastback silhouette”, while also releasing a trailer showing off the 408’s grille and badging.
Our spy photography agency took a picture of this car a few weeks ago.
Although the well-camouflaged development car has most of its styling details hidden from the vehicle, we can see the crossover coupe silhouette and raised bodywork fairly easily.
Peugeot says the 408 will be announced “by the end of June 2022”.
When it goes on sale, it will complicate Peugeot’s naming structure, which is now traditionally named x08, where x is a number indicating the vehicle’s dimensions.
The crossover vehicle now adheres to the x008 naming scheme, again x being the number designating the vehicle’s dimensions.
Not only does the new 408 model break the distinction between traditional badges and crossovers, but Peugeot also sells a model bearing the 408 badge: a sedan based on the previous 308 generation for the Chinese market.

Peugeot is not the first brand in the Stellantis range to blur the line between crossover styling and traditional bodywork, with the latest in design. Citroen C4 features a fast bodywork with raised travel height and prominent wheel arch guards.
We believe that the new 408 will be based on the Stellantis EMP2 platform and therefore have much in common with 308 cellars and wagons, as well as Opel Astra and many others.
The company says the 408 has been designed for “high performance”, potentially suggesting it will be offered with the same plug-in hybrid powertrain as the 308 and Astra.

The PHEV systems of these cars combine an 81kW electric motor with a 1.6-liter turbo engine that produces 110kW or 132kW of power.
The 12.4kWh battery pack on the car is said to work well for about 60 km of zero-emission driving according to WLTP standards.
