Playdead releases new visuals that appear to be from game 3, Studio’s untitled game in development

Playdead seems to have released a new image from the third game in development, titled Game 3 as it doesn’t have an official title yet.

Playdead is one of the hottest developers in games and in no small part due to the mystery surrounding their game. It’s not a very overt studio, choose to give an image here or there rather than a full blog post with trailers and more like many others in the industry. And it doesn’t seem to follow any kind of timeline… because the studio just releases the game when they want it to and it works – both Limbo and Inside gets really good reviews, especially here at Game informant.

The mystery surrounding Playdead remains with the studio’s third game in development. The latest look at Game 3 comes from a tweet Advertising jobs are available at the Copenhagen-based studio.

Here’s a closer look at what appears to be from Game 3:

As you can see above, the tweet is pretty innocuous – part is celebrating Playdead’s 15th birthday and another part is a link to open jobs there. It also refers to the time Playdead developed the game. Limbo, the first title, took six years, and Inside, the second, also took six years. Inside launched in 2016, meaning that if Playdead continues its six-year tradition, Game 3 will be out next year. Maybe that’s why the tweet mentions Game 3 and includes a new image from it. As for what this picture is, however, that’s anyone’s guess.

It could be an actual screenshot from the game, but it could also be concept art. Also note, that Playdead’s art style resembles the concept art style, so it’s hard to differentiate between the two compared to other Playdead titles. Regardless, we are delighted.

As you can see in the image, it features an astronaut who stumbles across a dilapidated old car. The vehicle appears to be under a large concrete building or possibly a large rocket ship (the pylons on the left look like boosters). One interesting thing to note is that the astronaut is walking forward in a 3D space. Both Limbo and Inside task the player with moving right and left across the screen in a 2D environment. Perhaps Game 3 has moved on to 3D motion and exploration.

Only time will tell for now. While you wait to learn more about Game 3, read on Game informant Detailed review and then check Game informant Internal assessment. Read this story about E3 2021 trailer for Somerville, new game from former Playdead CEO, afterward.
