pm modi: Indigenous 5G test bed in telecom sector is an important step in India’s self-reliance: PM Modi at Trai event


NEW DELHI: On the occasion of the Silver Jubilee Celebration of Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday launched the 5G Test Bed, developed as a multi-instrumental collaborative project led by a total of eight institutes by IIT Madras.
PM Modi on this occasion as the main guest via videoconference. He also issued a postage stamp of TRAI’s silver jubilee celebrations.
Addressing the event, Prime Minister Modi said that in the eight years that his government has been in power, India, through 5R, has infused new energy in its telecom sector.
Prime Minister inaugurated the country’s first 5G test factory to enable startups and industry players to test and validate their products locally and reduce reliance on facilities foreign. He expressed support for 5G technology, predicting that it will bring a positive change in the way the country is governed.
The test plate was set up at a cost of around Rs 220 crore. The Prime Minister said that 5G testing is an important step for self-reliance in the direction of important and modern technologies.
“It will also bring about a positive change in the ease of doing business, the ease of living. All sectors, including agriculture, health, education, infrastructure and logistics. This technology will make things easy and also create job opportunities,” said PM
“In the 21st century, connectivity will also determine the pace of India’s development. It is therefore essential to modernize linkages at all levels,” he added.
Modi added: “I invite young people, researchers and companies to use the test facility to create 5G technology.
The 5G pilot plate has been developed as a multi-institutional collaborative project led by eight institutes led by IIT Madras.
In the absence of 5G testing, startups and other industry players are required to go abroad to test and validate their products for installation in 5G networks.
Other institutes that have participated in the project include IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Bombay, IIT KanpurIISc Bangalore, Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research (SAMEER) and Center of Excellence for Wireless Technology (CEWiT).
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the project was developed at a cost of more than Rs 220 crore. Test Bed will enable an ecosystem of support for Indian industry and startups, helping them validate their products, prototypes, solutions and algorithms in 5G and next generation technologies next.
TRAI was established in 1997 through Telecommunications Regulatory Authority Act of India1997.
