The Vice President “never attends ceremonies held in the Central Hall of Parliament as a matter of convention,” the Rajya Sabha Secretariat said today, responding to a report on the day’s meeting. 11/14 at the National Assembly. November 14 is the birthday of the nation’s first Prime Minister and flowers are sent every year in memory of his portrait in the Central Hall of the National Assembly.
The Head of Parliament in Rajya Sabha Jairam Ramesh tweeted: “Extraordinary setting today at Parliament at the traditional function to mark the birth anniversary of those whose portraits adorn the Central Hall. fake Lok Sabha is absent. President Rajya Sabha is absent. Not a single Minister is present. Can it be more brutal than this?!”
“As of this writing, the Vice President of India never attended the ceremonies held in the Central Hall of the National Assembly as a matter of convention and it is wrong to assume that Vice President Shri M.Venkaiah Naidu skipped the ceremony yesterday,” the Rajya Sabha Secretariat said.
“The aforementioned false reports have caused profound grief to Vice President Shri M.Venkaiah Naidu. Vice President Shri M.Venkaiah Naidu who was in Delhi yesterday paid his respects to the former Prime Minister, the late Prime Minister Shri Jawaharlal Nehru and the same were also reported in the media,” the statement added.
Speaker Lok Sabha Om Birla has said that whenever he is in Delhi, he attends such ceremonies. He attended similar functions in 2019 and 2020. Yesterday, he was in Jaipur to attend an official function.
Jairam Ramesh’s comment drew a response from Derek O’Brien of Trinamool. “Nothing surprises me anymore. This time period is destroying major Indian institutions including Congress one day at a time,” he tweeted.
