Reader Discussion – Switching 5th Anniversary: Favorite and Underrated Games

It’s hard to imagine Nintendo releasing its most recent console, the Switch, 5 years ago today. With it beginning the handheld hybrid revolution ushered in one of the greatest games of all time The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and then Super Mario Odyssey. It’s been a hell of a ride so far, and in the half-decade since its release, the Nintendo Switch has faced off against not one, but two generations of powerhouse consoles from rival brands Xbox and PlayStation, and continues to sell well despite being undeniably a less powerful graphical device.

The Switch has been the home of so many great gaming experiences since its release on March 3, 2017. I want to know two things from you, dear reader: what is your favorite game on Switch of all time, and what is a game that you feel is an underrated gem that deserves more play? ? Give me your answer in the comments section below and let’s celebrate some great video games.

To lead the discussion, here is my answer:

At first, I don’t think it would be an unpopular answer, but Breath of the Wild By far my favorite game on the Switch. And that’s despite my dirty little secret to it; I have never launched the credits for it. I spent hours roaming the expansive landscape of Hyrule, tackling temple challenges, climbing mountains, searching for korok seeds, or hunting for new gear and weapons. It’s so different from the Zelda formula, and so important in the discovery and wonder of the world, that I feel enigmatic by it whenever I pick it up. It’s really brilliant all around and, although it’s all my fault, I haven’t finished it yet, I plan to do so before the sequel ends. Whenever that is supposed to be.

For an underrated gem, I think more people should see The story of the monster hunter 2. Not only is it a monster collector (one of my favorite RPG subgenres), but it also offers an interesting battle system and is very different from the Pokémon, Dragon Quest Monsters, and TemTems in the world. . I really think people can pick up concepts from the Story and put those ideas into the main Monster Hunter games, which is a huge boon for people who are interested in the series but are too scared by it. all things go hunting.

Anyway, those are my options. Let us know which Switch game you liked and underestimated in the comments. For more celebratory action, check out last week’s episode of Brian Shea’s podcast Everything Nintendo where he talks with former editor Ben Reeves about the Switch’s 5 years of life so far.
