Red Bull claims first F1 constructor title since 2013

Red Bull won the Formula One constructors’ championship for the first time since 2013, ending Mercedes’ eight consecutive title streak.

The championship was secured at the US Grand Prix, with three races to spare, a day after company founder and team owner Dietrich Mateschitz died aged 78.

Max Verstappen, who won the driver’s title two weeks ago at the Japanese Grand Prix, took it in style, claiming his 13th win this season.

“Max Verstappen, you are the world champion, we are the world champion!” The team’s boss, Christian Horner, spoke on the radio after the race, adapting the nickname he’s known over the years.

“Dietrich Mateschitz, thank you for everything you do.”

Verstappen replied, “It’s all Dietrich.”

The championship marks the end of an era of Mercedes dominance, which began in 2014, when F1 switched to turbo-hybrid engines. Red Bull failed to beat Mercedes to win the constructors championship last year despite Verstappen claiming the driver’s title.

Although the driver’s title is the more famous of the two, F1’s prize money is awarded based on finishing position in the constructors’ championship.

Red Bull has won four previous championships in consecutive years, from 2010 to 2013.
