Republican senators on Sunday voted to reduce the private market price cap for insulin, removing it from the Democrats’ sweeping economic and climate package.

Democrats tried to uphold the provision to cap insulin costs at $35 for private insurers, but that vote failed 57-43, with seven Republicans voted with them to keep the insulin cost cap on the bill, three short of what was needed.

The move is expected following a decision by the Senate congressman, who previously determined that the insulin supply did not comply with the institute’s strict budget rules. Democrats need to stick to those rules to push through the legislation, known as the Inflation Reduction Act, without any Republican votes.

However, the law still includes a $35 copay limit on the price of insulin for seniors with Medicare.

Following the vote, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden, D-Ore., accused Republicans of being under pressure from the pharmaceutical industry at the expense of the people.

“Republicans have just set a record in favor of expensive insulin,” Wyden said in a statement. “After years of heated discussion about taking on insulin makers, Republicans have been resistant to withering in the heat from Big Pharma.”

“Fortunately, the $35 insulin copay limit for insulin in Medicare is still on the bill, so seniors will get relief from the high costs of insulin. I will continue to work to cover the cost of insulin. lower for all Americans,” he added.

Republican sentiments Bill Cassidy and John Kennedy in Louisiana; Susan Collins of Maine; Josh Hawley of Missouri; Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi; and Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan of Alaska joined Democrats in voting to keep insulin limits for private insurers on Sunday.

Senators worked through the weekend on voting on the amendment after the chamber passed the bill Saturday in a 51-50 . procedural votewith all Republicans opposing the proposal to proceed with the bill and Vice President Kamala Harris voted discord.

Senate Democrats are aiming to pass legislation on Sunday that brings long-stalled elements of President Joe Biden’s agenda, including big spending to combat climate change. post and expand the scope of health care, one step closer to reality. The package will then ship to the Home, which is currently planning to ship it on Friday.
