Rick And Morty Creator Faces Domestic Violence Charges
Justin Roiland, author of the TV series Rick and Morty and recently released High life game, has been accused of domestic violence against an ex-girlfriend.
NBC News reported that they received Orange County Superior Court records stating that a criminal complaint was filed against Roiland in May 2020 by the Orange County District Attorney. The complaint charges Roiland with “one count of domestic violence causing bodily injury and one count of false imprisonment due to intimidation, violence, fraud and/or deception.” Roiland was arrested and released on $50,000 bond in August 2020 and pleaded not guilty to both counts in October of the same year.
Based on NBC News The victim said that the incident between her and Roiland happened around January 19 of that year. A protective order was filed in October 2020, stating that Roiland cannot harass, threaten, monitor, or be within 100 feet of an unidentified person covered under the order. The order also causes Roiland to give up ownership of any firearms he owns or possesses. Orders last until October 2023. Theo NBC NewsRoiland is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday for a pre-trial hearing.

This news came shortly after its release High life, a first-person shooter game created by Roiland’s video game company, Squnch Games. Although the game is popular on Game of passingXbox’s Netflix-like game subscription service, it’s available at center of controversy over using AI generators to create poster art and vocal performances. Prior to High lifeFollowing its release on December 13, Roiland kicked off two NFT projects in 2021 and 2022 called The Best I Can Do and Art Gobblers.
