Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav revealed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Varanasi Gala Dinner
Varanasi:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s launch of the Kashi Vishwanath corridor today, the latest in a series of blockbuster events in Mr Varanasi’s constituency ahead of the Uttar Pradesh elections early next year, has provoked the Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav.
“Everyone stays in Kashi as the end of the day draws near,” the Samajwadi Party leader said in a comment criticized by BJP leaders.
Prime Minister Modi has visited UP, especially Varanasi, for events that many say have blurred the line between an official function and the BJP’s election campaign.
When asked about reports of month-long celebrations involving the Prime Minister, Akhilesh Yadav scoffed: “It’s good. They can stay there not just a month, but even two or three months. That’s it. suitable place to stay. People spend their last days in Banaras (Varanasi).”
The former minister mentioned a Hindu belief that it is auspicious to spend the last days in Kashi or Varanasi.
On a crowded day, Prime Minister Modi took a dip in the Ganga River and took the lead yajna at Kashi Vishwanath before kicking off the Kashi Vishwanath Dham (corridor) project. Ministers from all BJP-ruled countries are present for the Prime Minister’s two-day visit and will attend conclave with him tomorrow.
In the evening, he witnessed the spectacular Ganga aarti on the banks of the holy river.
Elections will take place over three months in Uttar Pradesh and four other states.
Akhilesh Yadav and his Samajwadi Party actively campaigned to overthrow the BJP government led by Yogi Adityanath.
Varanasi, Prime Minister Modi’s Lok Sabha constituency, is part of the Purvanchal constituency which has 160 seats on the 403-member UP council.
Akhilesh Yadav has accused the BJP of trying to take credit for projects he started as Minister before losing power in 2017.
“They are good at lying in front of you and me. However, one should avoid lying in front of god,” he told reporters.
He has claimed documentary evidence that the Kashi Vishwanath corridor project has been approved by his government, a claim that has been mocked by the BJP.
