Sergio Perez makes his Mexican team debut in the electric train series
Organizers said on Tuesday Formula One driver Sergio Perez will compete in the Mexican team’s all-electric sailing championship.
The series is the brainchild of Alejandro Agag, founder of all-electric Formula E and Extreme E racing and off-road vehicles.
Agag was Perez’s boss when the current Red Bull driver raced in the GP2 junior series, now Formula Two, in 2010 with the Barwa Addax team.
“Given my relationship with Alejandro, I have been keeping a close eye on what he is doing and his various championships, and I think what he achieves with promoting racing forms More sustainable sports cars are commendable,” Perez said in a statement.
“Seeing a racing team fly the flag for Mexico in the global arena would be amazing and I can’t wait to see RaceBird in action for the first time.”
Agag said Perez, who will not be joining the Mexican team, has all the characteristics to be a successful owner.
Perez’s team will be one of 12 competing for the UIM E1 championship using a single-pilot boat, which will be identical for the first two seasons and use hydrofoil technology.
They are expected to reach an initial speed of 50 knots, or 92 km/h or 57 km/h, over seas and lakes.
This series presents itself as a testing ground for future electric trains and clean marine transportation.
Co-founder Rodi Basso, former director of motorsport at McLaren Applied Technologies, said E1 wants to link teams with countries and cities and is in talks with many potential candidates.
He said E1 is also exploring the possibility of an event in Mexico.
