Solo Stove Pi Review: Cooking Pizza and Cast Iron With Ease


However, there is only room for one or two pieces of wood at a time. Never mind the removable handle that lets you open the back door, as you’ll be opening it multiple times during a single cooking session. In addition, there is no secondary fire here — after one use, the smoke coming out of the mouth of the furnace blackens the top of the furnace. It does wipe, but just a warning.

The Pi is very compact, especially when placed next to a giant oven like the Gozney Roccbox. But when I cooked with it over the course of two weeks, other advantages quickly emerged.

First, the cooking space is 15 inches in diameter. It’s big enough to fit our Lodge 12-inch cast iron skillet, but — and this is crazy — my pan handle sticks out. The pan body heats up to 600 degrees, hot enough to roast asparagus within minutes, but the handles are still relatively cool. As someone who burned himself with heat-resistant gloves, this is a revelation.

Second, the top is flat. This isn’t a feature I could ask for in a pizza oven, but it’s an incredibly convenient and sure-fire place to quickly put a burning hot pan while you quickly slice the asparagus, for put them in a serving bowl, and replace them with potatoes. This is clearly something that happened with the Solo Stove, as it recently debuted with a lid ($75) for its gun.

I’m also a bit concerned that there’s a noticeable crack in the middle of the pizza stone – it’s very difficult to clean, or the dough will sag or burn in the middle. It turns out that when the oven is at 700 degrees (and you’ve preheated the stone for at least an hour), the pizza cooks so quickly that there’s no need to worry.

Like most things related to entertainment, your choice of backyard cookware comes down to price and personal preference. That’s the only quirk I have with the Pi — the option I tried is the one with interchangeable wood and gas accessories, which comes in at a fantastic $645 at its current presale price. That makes it a hard sell when compared to Ooni Karu 12 ($399)This is also a pretty awesome oven that’s attractive and easy to use.

However, if you love to cook with wood – and you want your dinner to be quick, hot, and on the table in half an hour – then it’s hard to imagine a better summer of mindless shopping than the wood-burning version. I work full time and have two school-age children, and with a small, high-heat pizza oven, I can still have dinner cooked outside and on the table in minutes. I can even sip a chilled drink while I’m there.
