Unlike many of its competitors, Subaru is said to be in no hurry to integrate the LiDAR sensor into its safety system.
Subaru Laboratory Vice President Toru Saito said to Automotive News that AI pairing with a stereo camera is more efficient than LiDAR because the two cameras can triangulate objects from different angles, creating a better three-dimensional image.
“The use of stereo cameras has a huge advantage when it comes to connecting with AI,” said Mr. Saito.
“Other automakers pursue a multi-solution approach and use radar, monocular and LiDAR. But stereo cameras are capable of doing what these three technologies can do individually.”
Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously shared a similar view, arguing that nothing more than a camera is needed when people can drive without anything other than their eyes.
Future versions of the EyeSight driver-assistance system are expected to be compatible with over-the-air updates, though Subaru hasn’t revealed a timeline for when it will begin.
Subaru recently announced that it has sold more than 5 million vehicles equipped with the EyeSight driver assistance system globally.
EyeSight-equipped models also now account for 91% of its global sales, according to the automaker.
