‘Swarm,’ Superfandom, and Murder | WIRED

Most untamed, fandom poison. It turns logic into blind worship. It bites, stings and cuts anything in its path. It devoured tendon flesh, its ruby grin, cruel and unconcerned with its target, its prey. The fandom crushes the whole thing and shrinks into the cancel culture. It’s all mob instinct. It is collective force. It’s “Take our side or be whipped,” in Soprano style. It’s us or them. In the most extreme cases online, the fandom asks: What will not What do you do for the person or group or thing you love most?

For Dre (Dominique Fishback), the answer is undisputed. She will do whatever she has to do. Go to whatever length she needs. Everything serves Ni’jah, the Beyoncé-class pop star she can’t live without. Dre is a fan of all things Ni’jah: the most dedicated, the most knowledgeable, the most deserving. She runs a popular stan account with an impressive half a million followers. But her online reality doesn’t match her life experience. Dre prefers the maze in his mind, where everything is easier to control. As we found out, she was a hive of sticky injuries.

How those lesions rise to the surface, that’s where Reunion—new limited series from Janine Nabers and Donald Glover, just released on Amazon Prime Video—very focused. It is a portrait of the super community in the form of kamikaze. Self-destructive. Sinister. Illogical. That it happens to be inspired by BeyHive—perhaps the internet’s most notorious legion of superfans—do it your way. (The pre-episode disclaimer warns: “This is not a work of fiction. Any resemblance to a real person, living or dead, is intentional.”) I feel I feel that the Hive members won’t be very pleased with the characterization, but don’t let the framework get in the way of what’s being handled. Reunion must provide. It’s quite fun.

This is a vehicle of Glover, the show is about character research as well as a review of a place. Atlanta all are inertia. Except for season 3 — the most ambitious or worst part, depending on who you ask — it never leaves the boundaries of its city, its hidden treasures, and its hatches. Reunion Is the opposite. It has a key in the starter and a full tank of gas, runs from Texas to California to Tennessee and back. It has somewhere to be. (Still, oddly enough, for a show that covers so much territory, it feels very claustrophobic in terms of the subject matter). The crown jewel of the series is its commitment to turning — just when you think it’s going to turn right, it sends the car back and running over a pile of corpses.

Dre’s fandom turned assassin. When we first met her, tragedy was a thorn in her. She is carrying a lot of trauma. So she uses that vulnerability to hurt others, embarking on a cross-country trip where she kills anyone who slanders Ni’jah. Dre explains that death is “beautiful,” because “it’s equal, it happens to everyone.” According to Nabers, a former writer on AtlantaThe show’s brain structure is rooted in niche horror movies like piano teacher (2001) and Elephant (2003), where the wedding of loss, rage, love, and obsession is framed with razor-sharp intimacy.

The most convincing aspect of the series is Fishback. Her physique is amazing, it won’t surprise you if you’ve seen it Judas and the Black Messiah (2021) or Apple TV+’s The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey (a personal preference). IN ReunionShe looks like she’s hypnotized. Manic foot-tapping. The sounds of rapid breathing. Her whistle song is about the stare, the way her eyes are on the ping pong ball on the iPhone screen one second, and invites empathy the next. There is both intensity and surprise in every gesture, in every movement. This especially affects a show that doesn’t hold on to characters for too long (another drag, with an impressive guest list: Chloe Bailey! Billie Eilish! Leon! X Mayo!). In the end, Fishback’s differential draw was more than enough.
