Tesla Australia unlocks select turbochargers for all electric vehicle owners

Tesla has released shackles on some of its DC public fast-charging networks, open to all electric vehicle owners.

Five locations (each with multiple plugs) in New South Wales are currently listed in “Open turbocharger for non-Tesla” on the brand’s website, which represents a small portion of the network of 47 locations currently being offered Down Under.

The five stations listed as open to non-Tesla owners are Tamworth, Dubbo, Hollydene, Bathurst and Narooma. It is not clear if NSW locations will see more participation across Australia over the next month.

The move will give electric vehicle owners in those parts of New South Wales more options if the NRMA, ChargeFox or Evie public fast chargers are out of stock or unavailable.

According to a screenshot of the Tesla app posted on Twitter by Ridiculous feedNon-Tesla owners will have to pay $0.79 per kWh to charge with the Supercharger – or $0.66 per kWh if you pay $9.99 per month for ‘membership’ member’ of the network.

The move in Australia follows the wheel of a pilot in November 2021 in Netherlands, France and Norwayexpanded in May 2022 to include Sweden, Spain, Belgium and the UK.

“Access to a widespread, convenient, and reliable fast charging network is critical for large-scale EV adoption. That’s why, since opening our first Superchargers in 2012, we’ve been committed to rapidly expanding our network,” Tesla said at the time in a press release.

“We have always had an ambition to open the Supercharger network to non-Tesla electric vehicles and by doing so, encourage more drivers to use electric vehicles. More customers using the Supercharger network allows for faster expansion,” it said.

“Our goal is to learn and iterate quickly, and to continue to actively expand the network, so that we can eventually welcome both Tesla and Non-Tesla drivers at every Supercharger worldwide. gender.”

Tesla currently dominates the electric vehicle market in Australia. Model 3 (sales 10,877) and Y (8717) are the two best-selling electric models locally in 2022, followed by BYD Atto 3 (2113) and Polestar 2 (1524).

A total of 33,416 electric cars were sold in Australia last year, about 3.0% of the total market.
