while not all Harry Potter fan is a trans person like JK Rowling, the new open world RPG Hogwarts legacy would seem to send the most dedicated obstinate people out into full force. Since the pre-launch period, the game’s discussion forums on Steamtop PC platform, filled with hateful, disgusting posts from people who clearly need to touch the grass.

While Hogwarts legacy Developed by Warner Bros., the game has considerable controversy because of its series creator. JK Rowling is known for posting sublime views on Twitter, oppose the law that will make it easier for transgender people to survive and spread wrong information about transgender health care. The leading LGBTQ media organization even holds a “responsibility” page about Rowling’s damaging actions against transgender and non-binary people.

Rowling is not direct participate with the development of Hogwarts legacybut she will report make a profit from using the game Harry Potter IP. Understandably, many transgender rights sympathizers are uncomfortable with spending money on games, and many have call for a boycott. The surrounding controversy has colored Heritage‘s debut in a seemingly inevitable way. From a cursory glance at Steam discussions, there’s a comment that is offensive or defensive on every page or two. Maybe this is inevitable, since Valve only censors Steam forums if a user flags problematic content. Now that the game is out, Steam users are posting 2-3 pages of comments every minute or so.

Lots of comments on HeritageSteam’s forums don’t even talk about the game. Some posts Thanks Rowling for disturbing players to “wake up” and “prevent” gay people from playing the game. Other read: “Dear gay and transgender people in discussions… If you can’t handle people who are different… [from] you, you won’t survive five minutes outside. Dude, I’m not one to be upset posting metabolic junk on the Steam forums. other pride announced that they don’t like Harry Potter, but want to buy the game to support Rowling.

Heritage includes a character named Sirona Ryan, the franchise’s first transgender woman. Yes or no she is an example of good representation is not the main topic of discussion on the Steam forums. Instead, most of the comments were mocking her gender And include IN Heritage (including a particularly disgusting post about her dress, which I won’t link here). I don’t know if Ryan’s existence is a real olive branch for the transgender community, but trans people have poisoned every possibility of good faith discussion of her on Steam.

Of course, there are also many types of frequent transphobia that transgender people are accustomed to seeing on the internet. One topic with more than 100 comments claiming that being transgender is mentally ill. Others want all eccentric crazy dead. Other topic the indirect comparison of trans people to animals was so bad that it was actually locked by the moderators. The majority of Steam forums are still the wild west, and some players have sick of both sides quarrel in the comments. Kotaku reached out to Valve to ask if they intended to moderate these transgender comments, but had not received a response at the time of publication.

Not everyone is a hateful person. some have aghast with the amount of transphobia on a game discussion forum. Others tried to stand up against the transphobes. Unfortunately, there may be only one way to save these boards: Nuking them completely.
