Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said the daily figures for Covid were still too high.

The Hay:

Prime Minister Mark Rutte said the Netherlands would be “effectively closing” in the evening with bars, restaurants and shops closing early to limit a spike in Covid cases.

Dozens of protesters staged a peaceful rally in The Hague as Rutte tightened the closure of parts of the country, as hospitals warned they were being overwhelmed.

But fears of a repeat of the riots that swept the country last weekend due to government coronavirus restrictions suggest, at the moment, to be unfounded.

“From Sunday, the whole of the Netherlands is effectively closed from 5pm to 5am,” Rutte told a televised press conference.

“We have to be realistic, the daily figures are still too high,” he added, referring to infections that are reaching more than 20,000 cases a day, even though the vaccination rate for adults is around 85 percent.

Rutte acknowledged that the government has failed to get the message that people with symptoms need to get tested, since the government last tightened measures two weeks ago.

“I blame myself for that,” he said. “We have to do better.”

Previously non-essential shops were allowed to stay open until 6pm and catering establishments until 8pm.

Amateur sports will also have to stop after 5pm, while professional sports including football matches will continue behind closed doors.

Patrons must now wear masks and maintain a social distance of 1.5 meters (five feet), Rutte said, meaning cafes, cinemas, theaters and other venues will be closed. capacity reduced, Rutte said.

‘Snot-Bubble Guide’

Schools will remain open, despite the fact that the biggest increase in infection rates is among children. Students 10 years of age and older must wear masks in the hallways.

The government is also tightening “bubble guidance” so that primary school children with mild colds must stay home and get tested, it said in a statement.

Meanwhile, hospitals will cancel non-essential surgeries such as knee and hip surgeries.

During the protest near government ministries, residents rang bells, blew whistles and whistles while many held up signs reading “That’s not right”. One wears a star of David on his mask.

Police cars and riot police stand guard near the protest. Police say they have made a number of arrests for possession of illegal fireworks and failure to present identification.

Babs, a 38-year-old woman, said: “Covid is like a flu, it is a virus that we need to learn to live with in society, not trying to fight it because it is not effective. a sign that says “stop lying”.

Another protester, who gave his name as David, added: “The authorities are going in the wrong direction using a non-dangerous virus for a ‘great reset’ process to limit freedom of speech. by us.”

The protesters eventually dispersed peacefully but police said they remained on alert.

The Netherlands lifted most of its coronavirus restrictions in September but was forced to bring them back in October.

Riots broke out in Rotterdam last Friday and trouble spread to The Hague on Saturday and to other cities including Groningen in the north on Sunday and Monday.
