‘This is my third chance in boxing’

Via Allan Fox: Errol Spence Jr feels this is a third chance in boxing for him after suffering a horrific car accident and an eye injury that could have ended his career.

IBF/WBC Heavyweight Champion Spence has weathered those two incidents, and he’s now set to rematch on April 16 when he faces WBA champion Yordanis Ugas in a showtime pay-per unification match. -view at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

After everything he’s been through in the past three years, Errol (27-0, 21 KOs) knows he can’t be complacent in his preparations for the fight against Ugas (27-4, 12 KOs) .

Knowing what was going on for this competition, Spence had been working hard for the past four months to get his body in top shape for the tough Cuban Ugas battle.

This wasn’t the kind of fight Spence could handle when he went to heavy training camp and was careless with his diet.

Spence: I’m a top predator

“I am a big fish, shark, Great White, top predator,” said Errol Spence Jr. talk to Fighthype. “I feel great. I’m ready to rumble and ready to go. Training has gone well; I’ve never looked better.

“I didn’t gain weight and wore a sauna suit to try to lose weight with my body. At this boot camp, I worked on my body, and I’m in a very good mood right now.

“I don’t believe in a correction. Fight with someone of Ugas’ stature will push me to the next level and keep me practicing hard. If I were to fight Joe Blow or someone I was going to take down, I would probably weigh a bit more, sneaking in chips and snacks because I know it probably won’t be a long fight.

“Fighting someone the size of Ugas, I knew I had to be at 100%. I had to push its limits to defeat someone like Ugas, knowing that he was coming to fight, and that he was also a world champion and a world talent. I have to get it all out by April 16th,” Spence said.

Errol: This is my third chance

“I was in the gym, focused. I feel it happens for a reason to keep my mind on track and not take anything for granted,” Spence said.

“I don’t think it’s complicated for me at all because I’ve been to the gym. I have been trained. I’m not just getting started. I must have exercised for the previous four months. So I was focused and I was hungry.

This is my third chance at boxing. My eye injury could end my career, and my car accident could end my career. It’s been a hell of a ride so far, and I’m definitely not giving up. I definitely won’t give up on April 16th. I’ll get another belt.

Spence said of Ugas: “He’s going to be a tough guy to break, and he’s going to always go out of his way to fight. “I can predict an action packed fight for the fans.

“The fans will love this fight because Ugas came to fight, and I came to fight. It will be a great show. It would be great. There are fans here supporting me.

“A lot of boxers don’t fight at home because the fans don’t come to support, or they fight at home badly. But I feel right at home. I feel happy at home, and I’m happy fighting in front of my fans and family.

“The people coming to support me mean a lot to me, and I can’t wait any longer. I’ll just stick to my coach’s game plan and keep doing what I did in the gym.

“More importantly, stay focused for the past seven weeks, fast, listen to what my trainer and nutritionist have to say,” Spence says.

Errol needs to keep dialing for the rest of the weeks before fighting Ugas as this is the biggest test for him since the contest with Kell Brook.

The only reason Spence had a problem with janitor Shawn Porter in 2019 was that he purposely got into a fight with him on the inside during the fight. The fight would be much easier if Spence defeated Porter the way Ugas and Brook did.

Spence respects Usyk & Loma

“I think it’s really great, really honoredSpence said when asked about his thoughts on Vasily Lomachenko and Oleksandr Usyk defending their homeland Ukraine against Russian aggression.

“It is their homeland, and they must protect it, their family and friends. They are very proud — very respectful of them. I hope everyone is safe in Ukraine.

“I hope they pull through this great strategy. I hope they can prevent this conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

“He has always been a relevant person because he has a name,“Spence is about Keith Thurman. “I think his performance is very good [against Mario Barrios]especially two years off.

“He had a good performance. He just has to be there, focused and always hungry and he’ll be back to the top,” said Spence.

Thurman is an option for Spence if he is successfully knocked out by Ugas on April 16. Aside from Terence Crawford, Thurman is Spence’s best pick for a big payday.

To be sure, Errol is still bitter about former WBA/WBC welterweight champion Thurman not giving him a chance to fight for his titles during the time he became champion, but there is too lots of money for both so this match doesn’t happen. .

“A different mindset,” Spence said when asked why he prefers his training camp to others. “I actually trained four or five months ago today, so that’s why my training camp was so good,” Spence said.

It makes a difference for boxers who start training camp already in shape instead of being overweight, turning it into a fat camp.
