Peachtree Stable’s Port of Tawny (c, 3, Pioneerof the Nile – Livi Makenzie, by Macho Uno), second in GIII Jeff Ruby Steaks S. just two weeks ago at Turfway, won tickets to the GI Kentucky Derby for coach Brad Cox with the look Good looking won the GIII Stonestreet Lexington S. on Saturday in Keeneland.
The 5-1 hit found a favorable position in the fifth inning outside of the club’s first leg. Moves nicely while the three wide enter the far turn, he curls outside the top two for the long haul and slopes down the center to win the long haul on pacesetting Brigadier (Structure). The second, last year’s GIII Iroquois S. winner, added the lightning player after a dismal 10 in the March 12 GII Tampa Bay Derby.
Popular During due (Not this time), the runner-up in the GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S. March 5, raced further than expected and came in third.
The winner of the first two attempts at a mile across the Turfway synthetic track on December 4 and January 7, Tawny Port’s respectable 5th length beat 7 3/4 likely to be Derby’s favorite Epicenter (Not this time) –With a troubled ride on his first attempt on the dirt in a GII Risen Star S live-in renewal, Feb. 19. He’s a solid, beaten second second. defeated 2 and a half times, to Tiz the Bomb (Hit it a Bomb), in the last Jeff Ruby Steaks.
The Easter Star form has since been in production: the next GII Louisiana Derby winner was Epicenter (first); GI Blue Grass S. Zandon first and second (Start up) (Tuesday) and Smile Happy (Runhappy) (Monday); and GIII Sunland Derby Slow Down winner Andy (Nyquist) (Friday).
“He responded today,” Cox said. “There is a bit of a question mark about how well he will handle stains. He did a good job at the Fair Grounds. Florence [Geroux] went back and got rave reviews after that race, and I thought, ‘Well, you know, right now, maybe you should try Jeff Ruby Steaks.’ So that’s what we did, and he ran a really respectable race. Then we found ourselves nominated to this race and it was successful today. ”
As for the Kentucky Derby, Cox added, “We’ll see how he gets out.” [today’s race]. I want to congratulate [owners] Fort John and Elizabeth. Here’s John’s idea, coming back two weeks after the Jeff Ruby case. He said, ‘We need to look at this race,’ and I said, ‘Wow, I nominated him.’ We’ve been following him and he seems to have a great energy level and his weight is huge as well. He’s a handsome pony – very handsome indeed. [John Fort] picked him out. ”
Genealogical Notes:
Tawny Port, the 21st ranked winner and 44th black category winner for Pioneerof the Nile, was a member of the penultimate race of the sire. The first run of the late WinStar stallion consisted of five graded winners and it only got better from there, with Horse of the Year winner and Triple Crown winner American pharoah its second member. Pioneerof the Nile, an MGISW and runner-up in the 2009 GI Kentucky Derby, died suddenly at the age of 13 in 2019.
Livi Makenzie was purchased by Mike Walker in September for $5,500 to Mike Walker in 2010, placing third in two classified events and winning the Saylorville S. 2013 at Prairie Meadows, later purchased by WinStar for $190,000 in the November 2014 Keeneland sale. She had four ponies for WinStar, the last being Tawny Port – who sold for $430,000 to John P. Fort in Keeneland in September. — and resold November 2020 in Keeneland for $30,000 to St. Simon Place and Scott Stephens while the pony let Always dreaming. That Always dreaming The pony is now an avid monkey and the mare has been bred back to the WinStar steed Global campaign for the year 2022.
Tawny Port traces directly to the 1959 Hidden Talent winner Kentucky Oaks (Dark Star), her seventh dam. Hidden Talent is best remembered today with two important daughters: Broodmare of 1986, Too Bald (Bald Eagle), Capote champion (Seattle Slew), MGISW Exceller (Vaguely Noble), and the winners. another one; and Switch to Talent (Turn-to), hostess of MGISW and top sire Broad Brush (Ack Ack) and several other black winners. It’s thanks to Turn to Talent that Tawny Port tracks.
Livi Makenzie is from champion Macho Uno, who now has 20 winners among her daughters. His First Empire winner is Soaring Free S. In 2021 (Classic Empire) is the son of Pioneerof the Nile, while MGSW of Pioneerof the Nile and the young male Prince Cairo is the mare of Holy Bull, the mare of Macho Uno.
