While it might be easy to let all of our photos live in our phones, actually printing them out is more than just a great way to add some personal touch to our living space. you but also an interesting decorative element!
Showing off family photos doesn’t have to be a gimmicky thing that only grandmas do, and to prove it, here’s a bunch of different tips and ways to create a family photo display in your home!

For this post, we’re partnering with Canon USA, and one of our favorite things about using their printer for home printing is the flexibility it gives you to choose from. You can print large-scale photos, optional overlay sizes, as well as smaller pocket 2 ″ x 3 photos (and everything in between) depending on the printer option that’s right for you.
Printing from home also means you can get your photos out whenever you want from the comfort of your home!
One question we get a lot is which printer do we recommend, and we have several in the group. Our three favorite printers are:
- First PIXMA TS9521C, is an all-in-one manual printer. It can handle up to 12×12 borderless prints and is a great multifunction printer.
- The PIXMA MegaTank G3260 The printer is super versatile and has a large ink supply, so you don’t have to refill the printer as often. There’s nothing worse than getting ready to work on a project and having to go find ink!
- The Canon IVY is the cutest pocket printer that allows you to print directly from your phone. It uses ZINK technology so you don’t need ink and you can turn your photos into stickers by simply peeling off the back!
Mounts with the same frame and size for easy matching:
Elsie’s large family gallery wall filled with commemorative photos, but by keeping the dimensions and frames of each photo the same, it really helps to make it all feel like part of a collection. You can choose a frame color that is similar to the wall color if you want them to blend in with the wall a bit more.
Sometimes this is useful for large galleries so it doesn’t look too overwhelming and heavy. Or, you can choose a prominent frame color/material if you want to make the frame more visually appealing.
Use a frame to hold multiple related photos:
When you have a series of related photos (first day of school every year, family photos every year on vacation, etc.), use a frame like I did for my daughter’s first year pictures is a great way to have a photo gallery in one place.
Simply crop a projection to your frame size and then crop as many windows as you want so your family photo collection can live harmoniously in one frame.
Choose a similar color scheme for your photo:
Keeping your photos within a limited color palette is a great way to give a balanced and cohesive look to the screen. Whether you go for the all-black and white option (which is probably the easiest way to do it) or choose a photo with similar colors, matching the tones will make it feel like a curated collection.
If your photos have a little color all over the place without much of a subject, then convert them to a black and white or sepia tone like Emma’s Mineral image display is a good way to make them all match and override the clash of colors.
Choose a mix of close-ups and further shots for your photos:
Having different cropping styles is another way to add visual interest. Sometimes you may want to show more of the scene (like a photo of your beach or when you visit the Grand Canyon), but combine it with closer shots or selfies so that everyone and the frame face is not far away.

Going big (and small):
Using a large-scale picture screen on the wall is a great way to add a personal touch to a space, but not every home photo screen needs to be large.
Mix it with larger screen in some areas and use other smaller screen (like this Easy DIY 5 Minute Wooden Ball Photo Holder or Lucite Block Photo Frame DIY) on coats, tables, cabinets and shelves.
Don’t forget to update!
As a parent, I’m certainly guilty of keeping pictures of my daughter when she’s tiny, but I try to make sure I also have a bunch of photos over the years to keep them safe. in the end I don’t have a boy just her baby pictures up.
Try to take new pictures and actually print and display recent memories so you can go down a memory lane that can go right to your current location.
