Tornadoes in the US are likely to break out “One of the biggest” in history: President Joe Biden
We still don’t know how many lives were lost and the full extent of the damage,” Joe Biden said (File)
Wilmington:
The powerful storm system that devastated parts of the United States overnight is likely to be “one of the largest tornado outbreaks in our history,” President Joe Biden said.
“It’s a tragedy. And we still don’t know how many lives were lost and the full extent of the damage,” he said in televised comments.
At least 78 people have died, including more than 70 in Kentucky alone, after a series of tornadoes raged across five states, leaving devastating post-apocalyptic scenes.
There are concerns that the toll will increase.
“Whatever it takes, I’ll ask for it,” Biden announced during his press conference.
Asked if climate change would affect hurricanes, he said he “cannot say” and that he would ask the government’s Environmental Protection Agency to look into the question.
“But the reality is we all know things are going to get more intense as the climate warms,” Biden continued. “And obviously it has some impact here but I can’t give you a quantitative read on that.”
He promised to visit the damaged area, but said he wanted to make sure he was not “hindered in rescue and recovery.”
“But I…will plan to continue,” he said.
